Washington
State Marine Surveyors - "(SAMS) Society of Accredited Marine
Surveyors Inc."
This
list includes boat surveyors who have been accepted into membership
of the "SAMS" organization.
Salmon Bay
Marina and Salmon Bay Boat Sales suggests that perspective boat
owners:
Have a
qualified shipwright review boat survey results prior to purchasing
a boat if any questionable condition may exist. Some "SAMS"
surveyors do not explore beyond the obvious shell. Excessive Dry
Rot (even on fiberglass boats) may exist behind cabinets, or below
decks and will not be identified by the surveyor.
Be sure
the nomenclature of the survey is understood. A purchaser may
think "Fair" condition is OK however "Fair"
condition may or may not mean OK in the eyes of the surveyor.
Note the
fine print of the surveyor's disclaimers. Many of the "SAMS"
surveyors basically say they are not responsible for things they
do not see. (Then again isn't this the reason for the survey?)
This is why we suggest to have a qualified shipwright also inspect
the vessel. (A typical survey agreement can be found at: http://www.marinesurveyor.com/wilson/pdf/engine.pdf.
Notice the Highlighted Red.)
Insurance
companies tend to use marine surveyors valuation of a vessel
as a guideline if they should furnish insurance coverage.
Shipwrights
generally have to fix what the surveyor indicates to be wrong
as well as all the stuff the surveyor misses.
Explore
having a "Mechanical Survey" performed on the boat as
well as the "boat survey". A boat survey generally does
not include engines or anything mechanical.
